I’m sitting here in the empty living room of our new house, lounging on a Tommy Bahama beach chair with Hawaiian sand still in the cup holder, wishing I hadn’t just devoured an entire bag of M&Ms. But here I am at 1:42am, hanging out with a jet-lagged 3 year old who is wondering why we haven’t seen Santa Claus here in Germany yet.
Thinking about | what this next year is going to look like, wondering how hard the European driving test is going to be, and hoping to find a preschool that has openings so I can take a full course load spring semester.
Reading | Wild: From Lost to Found on the Pacific Crest Trail by Cheryl Strayed
Listening to | trains passing our house every 20 minutes or so. They are electric so it’s just a a low hum (no horns or whistles – take that Kent)! I also thought I heard a faint newborn cry. Could be my biological clock ticking, could be the neighbors… who knows.
Drinking | Lots and lots of water. I can’t wait to try all the different local beers, but for now I MUST REHYDRATE.
Thankful for | 2 playgrounds in walking distance of our new house – best thing ever!
Missing | my fam back in Washington. We got to stay there for 8 weeks between Hawaii and Germany and my son got used to having aunts, uncles, and grandparents around all the time. Maybe one day we can live in Washington again *sigh*
Loving | that my son calls our new house the stinky house (They just repainted and replaced the carpets.)
Well, that’s it for now. I gotta run because my son is calling from the other room that he is stuck in the laundry hamper (again). Hopefully he gets back to sleep before the sun rises in Germany – wish me luck!
Have you been to Germany before? What cities/castles/fests would you recommend seeing while we’re here?

My daughter is currently living in Wiesbaden and I have been to visit three times! I am heading over this Friday for Thanksgiving and to stay until she has her second baby, due December 6th. I don’t know where you are located, but Heidelberg is lovely and so is Ruedesheim. Enjoy the Christmas markets!
Chloe, that’s so much fun that you can visit so often! Maybe I will run into you at one of the Christmas Markets :)
Germany, how fun! Glad you’re there safe and sound.
Thanks! We are so happy to be here finally. It’s been a long road :)
I have always wanted to visit Germany! I cannot wait to hear more about your adventures there. How long will you be living there? Oh so much fun!
Thanks Kenzie! I can’t wait to go on some adventures :) We aren’t sure exactly how long we’ll be here, but it will be at least a year or two :)
Congrats on surviving your trip, and welcome to Germany!
Thanks Natalye! We just barely survived the trip ;)
So jealous, I always want to visit Germany, especially Erfurt where my mom and dad met and fell in love.
That’s so cool! I hope you can go one day.
I often find myself in these moments as well….what, when, where, why, HOW? I’m new to this life so these questions seem to be free flowing lately! I hope you enjoy your year in Germany and I’m excited to see where your adventures take you! :)
Thanks so much Jen! I’m sure it will be great once we are all settled :)
Can’t wait to see all of the pictures! I’m still jealous that y’all went from Hawaii to Germany.
It’s been a crazy ride! I think I need a new camera that is small enough to take around with me everywhere. Otherwise you all are going to have to look at my crappy iPhone pics lol
Cologne and Berlin are two great places to visit. I’ve also been to Frankfurt but found it quite dull. I love the beers and wursts! Good luck!
Thanks for the suggestions! We actually flew in to Frankfurt and thought it was so cool, so I guess I’m easily impressed :)
Germany is on my list of places to visit! Great photo :)
Thanks Heather! I hope you get to visit one day :)
Guten Morgen…can you describe your town? Have your been to the local bakery yet? How about the Spielplatz (Playground)? Have you met other moms?
Hi Beth!! I don’t know why, but I just saw your comment from a couple weeks ago :) The town is beautiful, so many trees and hills. I have been to the bakery and it’s fantastic. My favorite is the chocolate croissants with powdered sugar on top! The playgrounds are kind of old school, but they are very sturdy and mostly constructed of wood. Scott loves having so many playgrounds (and kids) around!
Welcome to Germany, hope your family feels cozy here. With the upcoming Christmas Markets you’re going to have a love fun very soon, i’m sure. :)

Wow I was born in Germany, Frankfurt Aui Main to be precise. My parents left when I was like 2 or 3 I really wanna go back to visit and see where I was born!
That’s really cool! I have met a few people who were either born in Germany or spent some time in their childhood here, and all of them have said they loved it. I hope you make it back here to see your birth place!
Have you been to Italy before?
Not yet Ashley, but it’s pretty high up there on our travel bucket list.
That sounds like quite an adventure! I hope you get to stay in close contact with your family. It must be hard to be so far away!
It is hard to be far away, but we just got the internet hooked up and FaceTime is a live-saver :)
You lucky bean! It is one place I simply must go to!
Thanks, Holly! I hope you can stop by Germany some time and check it out! Although I’m sure you’re still busy exploring big ol’ Canada ;)
